Mountains as Sites of Myth, Barriers, and Exploration
Mountains have long fascinated people, acting as sites of exploration, conflict, and discovery. From the famed Mount Olympus of the Greek gods to the Rocky Mountains of the western United States frontier, and to the fantastical mountains found in cartography, they have mystified and captivated, both halting and encouraging progress. In honor of our location at the foot of the Rockies in beautiful Downtown Denver, Colorado, our theme for the 66th Annual Meeting encourages scholars to consider mountains as sites of human encounter with each other and nature alike.
The audience at SHD meetings is diverse and includes academics and members of various professions who are interested in the processes and consequences of geographical exploration and discovery.
We are excited to announce that the 66th Annual Conference will be held in downtown Denver, Colorado, from October 23 - October 25, 2025. The Hilton Garden Inn Denver Downtown is the Conference hotel and will host the Thursday night Welcome Reception. Meetings will be at the Denver Public Library. The Friday night banquet will be held at the Cactus Club. All of our venues are within a reasonable walking distance!
The cost to attend the Conference for regular members is $175, and $100 for students. Registration includes the Welcome Reception, with hors d'oeuvres generously provided by the Rocky Mountain Map Society, and a cash bar available. Additionally, registration includes attendance to the Annual Banquet at the Cactus Club, with dinner and complimentary drinks provided. Guests only attending the Banquet will pay $50.
Registration will become available in the coming weeks.
The Hilton Garden Inn is reserving 25 rooms for SHD attendees at a special rate of $189 plus 15.75% tax per night (totaling $219). The rate includes high speed Wi-Fi and discounted parking ($25 per day). The rate is good for reservations made before September 25, and it also can be used for three days before and three days after the SHD conference.
